About Us
The man whose vision saw the formation of the Hastings Valley Vikings Rugby Union Club was Steve Arnold, usually in discussions after winter touch football games in 1995 with cofounder Lance Kedward.
A formation meeting was held at the Settlers Inn late that year and a first committee of seven was elected consisting of: Steve Arnold – President, John Sommerlad – Vice President and Under 19 coach, Lance Kedward – Secretary, Paul Banner – Treasurer and committee members, Dave MacPherson, Rodger Kendall and Tony Cox. Cox also took on the role of senior coach.
The colours of black, gold and grass green were decided upon and the Club entered into the Mid North Coast competition for the 1996 season. The Vikings senior side contested the President’s Cup competition and in only its second year took out the premiership in that division defeating Coffs Harbour’s Southern Cross University Marlins 23-10 in the Grand Final.
In 2000 the Vikings moved to the First Division Competition winning the Minor Premiership and contesting the Grand Final in 2001 only to go down to Coffs Harbour Snappers. 2003 again saw the Vikings First Grade runners up and a few lean years ensued until 2010 although one bright moment was a move to our own ground, Oxley Oval, in 2004.
In the 2010 season under the coaching of David Keys and skippered by Gil “Captain Cranky” Hopley, the Hasting Valley Vikings won their maiden 1st Grade Premiership downing local rivals the Port Macquarie Pirates 20–12 at Stuart Park.
The following decade saw continued growth first with Craig Smith and his outstanding vision and hard work in establishing Viking junior teams and the Vikings First Grade contesting 7 Grand Finals in succession winning 4 premierships and the Reggies team winning an unprecedented 6 Grand Finals in a row between 2014 and 2019.
From humble beginnings the Hastings Valley Vikings are now the premier Port Macquarie Club in the Upper Mid North Coast Competition and will remain that way for some time due to the successes the junior teams are now experiencing thanks to the talented coaching skills exhibited by people such as, Andrew Kable, Andrew Briscoe and Mick Aldridge who have all tasted premiership success with their junior Viking teams in the last few seasons.
The other reason the Vikings will have continued major successes long into the future is the exemplary leadership and tireless work displayed by committee members and volunteers.
In the early days names such as Dave MacPherson, Steve Taylor, Dave McCormack, Sean O’Brien and Pat Cox put the Club on a steady path. This was then continued by people such as John Beaumont, Mick Wilson, Darren and Mark Hill, Alan and Annemaree Tonkin, Chris Trutwein and Fiona McCormack and has now been passed into the capable hands of current administrators like Mark Howard, Nicole Williams, Mick Aldridge, Jen Taylor and David Barnes.
