Round 7: Vikings vs Coffs Snappers

Round 7 was Sponsor’s and Charity Day for the Vikings Rugby Club and a glorious, sunny winter’s day was a pleasing contrast to the wet weather that has plagued our 2022 season.

First grade was a physical match against the Coffs boys. The Vikings discipline in the first half let them down and penalties relieved the pressure they were applying through their strong pack. The home team scored first through Tyla Murvai but found themselves behind after an intense physical struggle ensued in the first stanza. Tries to Aaron Lee and Murvai’s second late in the half saw the Vikings go into the break leading 19 – 7. The struggle continued in the second session before the Vikings lead increased with tries to Ags and a double to young fullback sensation Cayden Briscoe. The final score of 38 – 12 probably didn’t reflect the physicality of the match although coach Hamish McCormack must be pleased with the effort his side is putting in each week to get on top of some strong opposition teams.

Points went to Lyndon Gale (1), Tyla Murvai (2) and Adam McCormack earned the three displaying his usual wholehearted effort.

Next week is a bye round then the local derby against the Port Pirates at Stuart Park on the day of our Anniversary Ball the 25th June will begin the covid delayed 25th Anniversary celebration of our Club.

Reserve Grade continued their climb to the top of the ladder winning 56 – 10 with fullback Jakob Haines contributing 31 points through a hat trick of tries and 8 conversions. 18’s won 28 to nil and 16’s remain undefeated winning their encounter 31 – 5. The only Vikings team not to post a win were the gallant 14’s who never gave up against their dominant rivals. Points in this match went to Taj Davis (3), Peter Field (2) and Tarquinn Proffitt (1).
