Round 13: Under 16’s Vikings vs Kempsey Cannonballs
A lifeline was sent by the Kempsey Cannonballs to the Vikings by offering up their home ground at Crescent Head to allow this match to be played today, as Oxley Oval was closed again….
The pitch was as wet as many of the team had ever played on, and with 60 minutes of constant rain across the warm up, the young Vikings were well and truly accustomed to the mud by the time the Ref’s whistle sounded the kick off of the match.
Short passes and straight running were the order of the day, and even with the rain stopping shortly after the start of play, the Ref had a challenging task in finding suitable locations to set the many scrums resultant from the slippery conditions.
After training well through the week the Vikings scrum was much improved on previous, and after 15 mins of almost continuous possession, the Vikings were rewarded with their first try. A second try for the Vikings followed shortly after, also by the forwards.
At half time the Vikings had their noses in front.
The Cannonballs opened the second half with a quick-fire try, which stunned some of the Vikings. But under the steady hand of captain Joe Post, and with some courageous running of the ball from forwards Alex, Seth, Felix and Jack particularly, it wasn’t long before the Viking had another try and then also a 4th try too. With the final bell sounding, the Vikings were given a lesson in playing to the Ref’s whistle as the Cannonballs snuck their second try in the corner after the bell!
It was a high tempo rendition of the club song for the victorious Vikings 22-10, with hot showers waiting!
