Round 3: Vikings vs Kempsey Cannonballs
The Round 3 clash between the two undefeated ladder leaders in the UMNC competition didn’t produce the close match that may have been expected. Kempsey scored first with an early penalty goal but the Vikings First XV team showing power and skill scored the next 59 points, the game ending slightly early due to a serious Kempsey injury at 59 to 3.
This week the majority of tries went to the forwards highlighted by a hat trick to ‘the incredible shrinking man”, Jeremy Segol. Fellow forwards, Hamish McCormack, Ags Eukaliti and Tyla Murvai all found the line as well as a smashing push over scrum that the Cannons illegally collapsed resulting in a penalty try that had the name of everyone in the pack on it. That score summed up the afternoon’s play. Kempsey tried hard but could not withstand the might of the Vikings onslaught. Both wingers were the only backs who crossed, Harry Sargent and Seb Pankiewicz bagged his usual. Snowy Kennedy kicked well landing 6 mostly from wide out positions.
Award points all went to forwards, Ags, Oscar and Tyla and Segol received the players vote.
Reggies won a close contest 20 – 15 scoring a bonus point win with their four try effort. Jono Tunks was judged best on field by the coaching staff and by his fellow players. 18’s went down on the bell 19 – 20 to a strong Kempsey outfit they will surely come up against again in some big games. 16’s made it two from two holding on to win 25 – 17 while the valiant 14’s were again undermanned but can hold their heads up high with a gutsy display. The match finishing 22 – 45 in favour of the Cannonball boys.
